We are drawn to Type 9s because they have a hospitable disposition due to their ability to see the world from everyone’s perspective. At their best, they are patient, accepting, open-minded, empathetic & able to bring people together.
The Type Nine structure is comprised of an underlying desire to be at peace, for things to be simple/easy, and for everyone to get along. This desire is coupled with an underlying fear of disruption, conflict, and causing separation with others. Nines' focus of attention is drawn towards others' preferences, wants & opinions in an effort to avoid conflict or tension from potential disagreements. They focus outward & take on others' perspectives to get along, but that results in a neglect of their inner wants, feelings & desires.
Enneagram Nines are naturally preoccupied with:
Being sensitive to others' agendas
Maintaining comfortable expectations & routines
Avoiding conflict & discomfort
Going with the flow
If you are trying to discern whether or not you lead with Type Nine, consider if these "I" statements resonate with you from the perspective of an Enneagram Nine:
I take life as it comes because things are going to happen no matter what you do
It seems that others are too critical - I think most things or people have redeemable qualities
People might think I'm forgetful, but there are just some things I'd rather not pay attention to
People experience me as easy-going & non-critical
Every once in awhile, anger will come out of the blue & I'll explode about something
I want everything to be pleasant - I really don't like when people argue or bring up problems
I think most things in life just aren't worth getting worked up about, but if it does matter to me, I really dig my heels in
