We are drawn to Type 1s as friends and loved ones because they are honorable and committed to a life of improving what is around them with integrity. At their best they are wise, ethical, reliable, realistic & orderly.
The Type One structure is comprised of an underlying desire to be good, whole, and right along with an underlying fear of being wrong, bad, or incorrect. Ones' focus of attention is drawn towards making things right & so instinctively they notice what is messy, erroneous, or imperfect. With the voice of their inner critic, they will habitually compare what is inside and around them as better or worse in order to avoid criticism or being wrong.
Enneagram Ones are naturally preoccupied with:
Getting things right
Acting responsibly & independently
Avoiding external criticism & blame
Adhering to their inner critic
If you are trying to discern whether or not you lead with Type One, consider if these "I" statements resonate with you from the perspective of an Enneagram One:
I feel like I should try to improve whatever I can whenever I notice that something could be better
It feels like no matter how hard I try, I'll never quite live up to the standards I have for myself
I have a strong conscience and a clear sense of what is right and what is wrong
I tend to beat myself up when I make mistakes
I often feel like if I don't do something, no one else will take the responsibility to get it done
Integrity is really important to me - I wouldn't be able to stop thinking about it if I wronged someone
It always feels like there is so much to get done in my work and personal life that it's difficult to find time for leisure
As a Narrative Enneagram Practitioner, I believe that the best way to learn about the 9 Types is to experience them. Learn more about Type One in my podcast episodes linked below:
