Enneagram 4 - the Individualist

We are drawn to Type fours because they are deeply authentic, emotionally honest, and attuned to beauty in a way that invites us to see beauty in new ways. At their best they are inspiring, creative, compassionate, and introspective.

The Type Four structure is comprised of an underlying desire to understand one's significance along with an underlying fear of being without personal significance. Fours focus of attention is drawn to their emotions, internal experience, others' emotions & their connection or disconnection with others. They have a tendency to get lost in more tender emotions (hopelessness, loss, longing) & begin to over-identify with their feelings.

Enneagram Fours are naturally preoccupied with:

  • What's missing or unavailable to them

  • Searching for what's extraordinary

  • Avoiding dullness or the mundane

  • Their personal feelings

If you are trying to discern whether or not you lead with Type Four, consider if these "I" statements resonate with you from the perspective of an Enneagram Four:

  • I'm aware of what I feel & I try to be honest with myself about what my feelings are telling me

  • I have a deep desire to have a meaningful connection to the work that I do

  • I can be completely captivated by something only to later feel disenchanted or disappointed

  • I feel compelled to be true to myself & to show up authentically

  • It often feels like others have figured out how to be happy in life in a way that feels fake to me

  • I question myself about everything - my motives, my feelings, my behavior - to the point that it's hard to do move forward

  • When I feel vulnerable or misunderstood, I tend to withdraw to avoid being

    further hurt

As a Narrative Enneagram Practitioner, I believe that the best way to learn about the 9 Types is to experience them. Learn more about Type Four in my podcast episodes linked below:
